…and these kids got to see why first-hand. will that stop every single one of them from doing it? sadly, no. but for the ones that are involved with fires, hopefully today’s ‘Fire Safety’ class by AFD will prove helpful.
kids in Austin love to mob the camera! it’s goes against all of their instincts to ignore it, but i managed to get a few photos where they weren’t totally distracted by the camera.
the following photos are from the Austin Fire Dept. and other agency’s annual summer Fire Safety class for kids in Parks and Rec. programs.

7/16/08 – Xavier Mascareñas/AMERICAN-STATESMAN; This year’s ‘Safety Camp,’ sponsored jointly by the Austin Fire Department, Austin/Travis County Emergency Medical Services, the Austin Police Department, and the Austin Parks and Recreation Department, was held at Givens Park in Austin. The event teaches youth involved in community outreach programs about fire, medical and personal safety. From left, Norman Derks, 11, Anthony Crawford, 10, and Jordan Thompson, 10, react as AFD burns a bedroom in a small trailer to demonstrate the speed fire travels. The kids are from the Dottie Jordan Park recreation summer program.

7/16/08 – Xavier Mascareñas/AMERICAN-STATESMAN; Adrian Moreno covers a simulated kitchen fire during a demonstration on fire safety led by AFD’s Ed Bridges during breakout sessions at the event.

7/16/08 – Xavier Mascareñas/AMERICAN-STATESMAN; Montrell Thomas, 9, applauds as AFD emcee Roger Davis referees a short game for the kids attending.

7/16/08 – Xavier Mascareñas/AMERICAN-STATESMAN; Liam Crimins, 10, gets sprayed in the face from his own hose during a competition while Anita Iyer, 8, and Dominic Valentino, 11, also hold on. Counselor Javian Johnson helps them.

7/16/08 – Xavier Mascareñas/AMERICAN-STATESMAN; AFD’s Tim Krcmarik puts on his firefighting gear prior to the bedroom-fire simulation that he and firefighter Lloyd Zmeko extinguish.

7/16/08 – Xavier Mascareñas/AMERICAN-STATESMAN; Zion Rogers, 10, cheers during the event as Trey Mays, 10, looks on.

7/16/08 – Xavier Mascareñas/AMERICAN-STATESMAN; AFD’s Roger Davis, who formerly worked for Austin Parks and Recreation, emceed the event. Here he leads representatives from the different parks in a friendly competition.

7/16/08 – Xavier Mascareñas/AMERICAN-STATESMAN; A toy motorcycle is one of the first things to catch fire during a simulation of a house fire.

7/16/08 – Xavier Mascareñas/AMERICAN-STATESMAN; AFD firefighters Lloyd Zmeko and Tim Krcmarik put out the simulation bedroom blaze set by Tim LaFuente with AFD to demonstrate the speed and danger of fire.

right off the bat- here’s my first attempt at outdoor studio strobes. even  just having access to one light helped immensely, and enabled results i could not have had otherwise.

i’ve used the Canon flashes before, and it’s usually fine, but the standard staffer kit that Kelly so graciously let me use (gracias) worked MUCH better. granted, it’s bulkier and needs more power, but i honsestly think it took me shorter to set up than it would have taken me to mess around with the infrared receiver on the Canon flashes not being consistent. and the power of the lights enable some nice options.
still need to work on the occasional big reflection in glasses, but overall, technically had a good time of it.

looking for a weather feature…

heres what i got. didn’t like the crop at first in the photo of the little kid (the full-frame had his grandpa holding him up at the fountain), but like it now. still, for me the photo was also about the grandpa in it, and his taking his grandkids to the river. one of those things where being present made a difference. maybe i could have captured that better, but anyway, heres the photo, and another option for that feature (which i’m glad they didn’t use — seem a little awkward.

this music festival was, sadly, a flop-

i felt horrible for the bands involved. they were out there al day, and there couldn’t have been more than 100 people total in attendance, for the day, for the festival which went from 10 or 11 in the morning to 9 p. m.

this photo kind of summed up the experience — not because the bands were bad, but because there was a lack of energy due to low attendance.

7/05/08 – Xavier Mascareñas/AMERICAN-STATESMAN; The ‘Born on the 5th of July’ EXIT Music Fest featured four stages of music at Waterloo Park in Austin on Saturday. Lorin Rhyne rest on her mother, Carey, between sets at the festival. They set up at the ‘Shut Up and Sing’ stage, near the drum stage. ‘Jingle,’ a miniature longhair daschund, rests at their feet.

first time shooting fireworks, and it was actually fun. the fun part was actually looking at the results, because you never know with long exposures (chances of parts of frame burning out, lots of dead pixels, ets.). thanks to Rudy G for a few quick pointers on shooting them.

we almost had a Michael Jackson scenario with a pyrotechnician here (just dated myself)
and heres some from the rest of the day:

this was a strange one. it was by far the most orchestrated event i have photographed involving police in an airport. obviously. the City of Lakeway PD earned the honor of flying the flag, which was on the Texas captiol  during the 911  terrorist attacks, by raising money to aid injured and disabled veterans from the Middle East.

this was interesting to shoot, with all the media around. even the statesman’s own Rudy Gonzalez was ther, shooting video. he did a great job, especially considering it was his first story attempt.
keep final cuttin’

a couple of fun ones from the ‘Kittypalooza’ event at the animal shelter.
**by the way, i’ve decided not to put caption info unless i feel it is absolutely necessary. this is more a casual display of photos for tracking my recent work.
also, and more important for the sake of the blog, it will remove one more hurdle in the way of me posting to this blog regularly.
