XAVIER MASCAREÑAS' BLOG — Photos and multimedia I’m working on or have already finished. Recent work is from The (Westchester County, N.Y.) Journal News,The (Farmington, N.M.) Daily Times. Older work is from the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman and the (University of) New Mexico Daily Lobo. I'll also try and keep notes on stuff I work on from time to time. Thanks for stopping by, and please say hi. Xavier
i had not yet had a chance to PHOTOGRAPH Barack Obama, ever, until this weekend. here are some photos from the event at UNM’s Johnson Field. i don’t envy the Secret Service’s duty of securing the premises — and checking everyone who comes through the gate. if anyone knows of a good photoessay/story on those folks, definitely pass it on. enjoy
my internship at The Daily Times in Farmington flew by. after all, it was a brief, six-week stint.
the Farmington Renaissance Faire was a fun assignment to get for my last day. i got to do video while Daily Times chief photog. Lindsay Pierce covered stills — a luxury allowed by our normally slow Sundays at the paper. the juggler in the video is definitely a character. let me know what you think.
a very windy day in the Four Corners — which doesn’t help when you have a little video camera without any mic inputs, but…i was impressed by the ability of that little mic to act like a type of shotgun-mic. overall, i’m happy with the way this daily-video turned out, and i was able to get a nice photo of the event to run in the paper to tease to the video online. also shot another assignment, and did some non-video related work, which i wouldn’t be able to do unless i’m stepping up the pace on my daily-video turnaround..yay!
alright. here are a few photos from this last week. most interesting was the Shiprock (N.M.) Navajo State Fair. i never knew you could have actual bumper-to-bumper traffic in Shiprock, but it happens! also, HWY 64, which connects F-town and Shiprock, has to be the roadkill capital of the country, if not world.
winter is looming.
oh yeah, from here on out, i’ll generally be including any info necessary for the photos in the short entries above them in each entry.
for this there were photos from a band story that never materialized (but ran as wild art), the rodeo at the fair, soccer (note: unfortunately no long glass, over 200mm, is available here — i’m definitely getting my exercise), preview shots for kids ‘walk to school day,’ teacher of the year awarded by wal-mart (with one of those oversized checks), more fair-related stuff, and photos from a police family day at ‘Safety City,’ a police training and exercises area. also, below is a photo from a preview on a quilt exhibit, and another band shot. i began and ended with the band — my own little circle of life.
