this game was an upset. Aztec was expected to win, but Piedra Vista HS kept them scoreless for two halves, two overtimes, and then took the penalty-kick shootout, 5-4. i love it when celebration shots highlight the goalie — they always stand out, making an easy-to-read photo.

today was tough. covering memorials and funerals for the media is instinctively unappealing for many of us, despite occasional public opinion claiming the opposite.

the thing is this, though: if we are assigned such an assignment, the premise is that it is newsworthy. whether that is because of events surrounding the death or funeral, the prominence of the person or what they stand for/symbolize, it is important. just because something is unpleasant, it does not mean it isn’t the right thing to do. *note: i feel this topic is very important, and wrote on and on and on and… but just came back and deleted it. i actually got lost in what i was saying.*

on to the photo. here is one that stood out as being a not-so-ordinary burial photo. very indicative of the region, actually.

and here’s two links to stories on him – one with my photo in the San Antonio Express-News! they have a super-talented photo staff, and play photos well, and look forward to getting my copy of today’s edition in the mail. thanks Anita!

(UPDATE to below: actually, i thought it’d be interesting to post this photo from yesterday (of a power plant) under the Shiprock photo. compare/contrast? full essays due Friday by noon ; )

i don’t photograph landscape much these days, which is kind of a shame, because that, snapshots of friends and oddities in high school, and the peacefulness of making prints in a darkroom are what really hooked me on photography at an early age.

i wouldn’t normally associate the Shiprock peak with foliage of any kind, but the San Juan River is right a little ways away (my dad the English teacher will kill me for that), and lends to some nice photos. i hope it prints well :)

Xavier Mascareñas/The Daily Times; A view Wednesday of the Shiprock peak, from a few miles outside Shiprock on U.S. 64, reflects the changing of seasons in the color of leaves on trees along the San Juan River.

i just wanted to post a few photos i liked from the last couple weeks that didn’t have faces, but that i was still happy with. it’s always a good challenge, and it can be pretty rewarding — a good way to break out of the daily box.

here’s my portfolio, as of (1…2…3…) now.
hope you like it. any feedback is greatly appreciated. right now i am trying to insert more space between the memorial photos below this post (great suggestion from Jorge S-L), but WordPress isn’t letting me insert more breaks between them. i can do it while editing the post, but it goes back to bumper-to-bumper photos after i save. anybody have this happen to them before? solutions?
