this may be it. i’m not shooting for a newspaper on a daily basis right now (but will be soon!),…but here goes! some of these are good news photos, some are good sports photos, and some are just plain fun. however, the one at the car show with the guy walking past the car with a bunny under the hood (#17) is just plain funny —

i dropped the photos in a soundless Soundslide, because it’s an easier format to view all the photos in. it just takes an extra second, but is well worth it — a better alternative to scrolling down 101 photos x 600 or so pixels.

i’m updating this from Nashville, where i’m doing the multimedia training for the Chips Quinn at the Freedom Forum’s Diversity Institute location on the Vanderbilt campus. it’s a pretty nice spot. the little i’ve seen of Nashville so far makes it seem like a great place, but i won’t get much time to check out the whole city until the program’s last day, Friday. meanwhile, the schedule ahead is pretty packed, so probably slim post-pickens until we’re done. when that happens, though, i ought to be putting up a couple of video projects that i’ll be making in collaboration with one or two other people. soooooo, keep checking. there might be an update with video in a couple of days. xavier-overandout

just had to drop this photo of a Statesman staff photographer…going on the staff wall here.
i went along to assist him on the shoot, and we had some time to play a bit with the lights and the props.

the Vista Ridge Apartments on South Mays in Round Rock had their second fire this week Friday. here are photos from when i went out Saturday morning.
i also photo’d a pack of wild dogs on someone’s property for a different assignment. it”s a long story, but the result of that day of chasing, sneaking and praying for the ability to be invisible is that i’m now ready for Nature Channel work :)
also, i’m posting a couple feature photos that ran inside the metro section.

8/02/08 – Xavier Mascareñas/AMERICAN-STATESMAN;  The second fire of the week swept through the Vista Ridge Apartments on South Mays Street in Round Rock late Friday. Benny McRae walks past the back of the apartment complex Saturday.  His son, Drew Ford, lived in the unit bordering the damaged apartment behind McRae. Ford was acquainted with the man whose apartment burned earlier that week, according to McRae.

Battalion Chief Shane Glaiser with the Round Rock fire department talks with Cassandra, who declined to give her last name, and who was with her two daughters and grandson, about the damage caused during the fire to her fiancé’s apartment.

Liz Dominguez gets her granddaughter Aaliyah Barron, 2, to drink water during the game while Aaliyah’s father, Anthony, provides cover from the scorching sun.

i’m sending these 5 clips in to fulfill my requirements for the Chips Quinn scholarship.
there are better examples i did this summer for the news stuff, but i was only able to access the last month of PDF’s when i did this at night, so i went by the dates for the hardcopy clips i had. overall, i’m happy with it.

the above cover is my photo, obviously

the two centerpiece features are from me on this page above
the centerpiece above is mine, and the smaller secondary (unfortunately)
this fun feature centerpiece above is me too

on this one above, the centerpiece is me
thats it. i’ll post some more photos soon. i got the next couple of days off, which is great, because i need ALL that time to start packing and cleaning…LAST DAY IS THIS FRIDAY! Aug. 8.

…and these kids got to see why first-hand. will that stop every single one of them from doing it? sadly, no. but for the ones that are involved with fires, hopefully today’s ‘Fire Safety’ class by AFD will prove helpful.
kids in Austin love to mob the camera! it’s goes against all of their instincts to ignore it, but i managed to get a few photos where they weren’t totally distracted by the camera.
the following photos are from the Austin Fire Dept. and other agency’s annual summer Fire Safety class for kids in Parks and Rec. programs.

7/16/08 – Xavier Mascareñas/AMERICAN-STATESMAN; This year’s ‘Safety Camp,’ sponsored jointly by the Austin Fire Department, Austin/Travis County Emergency Medical Services, the Austin Police Department, and the Austin Parks and Recreation Department, was held at Givens Park in Austin. The event teaches youth involved in community outreach programs about fire, medical and personal safety. From left, Norman Derks, 11, Anthony Crawford, 10, and Jordan Thompson, 10, react as AFD burns a bedroom in a small trailer to demonstrate the speed fire travels. The kids are from the Dottie Jordan Park recreation summer program.

right off the bat- here’s my first attempt at outdoor studio strobes. even  just having access to one light helped immensely, and enabled results i could not have had otherwise.

i’ve used the Canon flashes before, and it’s usually fine, but the standard staffer kit that Kelly so graciously let me use (gracias) worked MUCH better. granted, it’s bulkier and needs more power, but i honsestly think it took me shorter to set up than it would have taken me to mess around with the infrared receiver on the Canon flashes not being consistent. and the power of the lights enable some nice options.
still need to work on the occasional big reflection in glasses, but overall, technically had a good time of it.

looking for a weather feature…

heres what i got. didn’t like the crop at first in the photo of the little kid (the full-frame had his grandpa holding him up at the fountain), but like it now. still, for me the photo was also about the grandpa in it, and his taking his grandkids to the river. one of those things where being present made a difference. maybe i could have captured that better, but anyway, heres the photo, and another option for that feature (which i’m glad they didn’t use — seem a little awkward.

this music festival was, sadly, a flop-

i felt horrible for the bands involved. they were out there al day, and there couldn’t have been more than 100 people total in attendance, for the day, for the festival which went from 10 or 11 in the morning to 9 p. m.

this photo kind of summed up the experience — not because the bands were bad, but because there was a lack of energy due to low attendance.

7/05/08 – Xavier Mascareñas/AMERICAN-STATESMAN; The ‘Born on the 5th of July’ EXIT Music Fest featured four stages of music at Waterloo Park in Austin on Saturday. Lorin Rhyne rest on her mother, Carey, between sets at the festival. They set up at the ‘Shut Up and Sing’ stage, near the drum stage. ‘Jingle,’ a miniature longhair daschund, rests at their feet.
