several photos from the last couple weeks — and some personal news

…and they go hand-in-hand. actually, i haven’t posted any photos for a few days, but i wanted to be sure and post them now, because the foreseeable future has me sorting, trashing, packing, loading, driving, and driving, and … I am moving cross-country! to New York (White Plains) for a staff job with The Journal News! enough exclamation points for now, here’s some recent work. enjoy.

here’s a recent video from Farmington last Friday. i’m uploading right now from my mom’s rancho in the South Valley of ABQ (beautiful!). the video’s a bit long, but it’s actually two events in one.

i shot stills from the game for our sports section (i’ll post a few here later), and this video of the whole afternoon of the young’ns followed by the game (in Canon 5d Mark II, 640×480 compressed-video format). it was my first time shooting action (or anything major, really) with the 5D’s video mode, which is manual focus so a bit tricky…but it turned out fun. it’s awesome to have an SLR that can do that! i’m looking forward to shooting more video with the 5D in the future, and since most other events will be shorter, i can use the full 1920x1080p and have enough memory to handle it.

here’s some fun video from an opening ceremony at a local baseball game, where little kids ran all over the field (in an orderly fashion — actually, single file). a bit long, and i might cut a lot of the continuation of the high fives out sometime. other than that, it was a fun video, but lots of tape logged. i never shot baseball before, either, and was happy i got some decent game action.

‘five by five’

here’s some favorites for the week. five photos from five days. it’s really good to be working right now, and am excited about our new apartment. also kind of sad to be moving…the apartment we lived in across from UNM was the longest i’ve lived anywhere — since i was born! i’ll miss being able to look out my back window and seeing people and activity. you guessed it…farmington is not the most urban of cities.

the Vista Ridge Apartments on South Mays in Round Rock had their second fire this week Friday. here are photos from when i went out Saturday morning.

i also photo’d a pack of wild dogs on someone’s property for a different assignment. it”s a long story, but the result of that day of chasing, sneaking and praying for the ability to be invisible is that i’m now ready for Nature Channel work

also, i’m posting a couple feature photos that ran inside the metro section.

8/02/08 – Xavier Mascareñas/AMERICAN-STATESMAN; The second fire of the week swept through the Vista Ridge Apartments on South Mays Street in Round Rock late Friday. Benny McRae walks past the back of the apartment complex Saturday. His son, Drew Ford, lived in the unit bordering the damaged apartment behind McRae. Ford was acquainted with the man whose apartment burned earlier that week, according to McRae.

8/02/08 – Xavier Mascareñas/AMERICAN-STATESMAN; The second fire of the week swept through the Vista Ridge Apartments on South Mays Street in Round Rock late Friday. Battalion Chief Shane Glaiser with the Round Rock fire department talks with Cassandra, who declined to give her last name, and who was with her two daughters and grandson, about the damage caused during the fire to her fiancé’s apartment.

8/02/08 – Xavier Mascareñas/AMERICAN-STATESMAN; The Angels played the Cubs at a little league game Saturday at the YMCA baseball field at East Old Bowman Road and North Mays Street in Round Rock. Liz Dominguez gets her granddaughter Aaliyah Barron, 2, to drink water during the game while Aaliyah’s father, Anthony, provides cover from the scorching sun.

8/02/08 – Xavier Mascareñas/AMERICAN-STATESMAN; The Angels played the Cubs at a little league game Saturday at the YMCA baseball field at East Old Bowman Road and North Mays Street in Round Rock. Leighsa Dominguez, 8, covers her first-base position well as she fields a grounder that takes a big hop to make the out.
