hi all. here’s a few photos from last week — with some more recent photos to come soon…hello weekend! Monday is my “Friday,” my last day of work before my days off, so i feel a little guilty being in such a TGIF mentality. i just hope i get weekend weather — it threatened to snow here a couple times last week.

enjoy the photos.

this is a moving piece on a woman from Colorado, Lorainne Melgosa, who uses her horse-drawn carriage to transport the caskets for some military funerals in the area — and she was at Sgt. Kenneth Westbrook’s burial in Shiprock. NBC asked the paper a week ago to use photos from that day, and i sent them six to choose from. i’m glad they were able to use a couple. the whole “Making a Difference” profile is beautifully done (definitely inspires me to do more video). the segment with Charlene Westbrook, Sgt. Westbrook’s widow, starts at about 1:20. Charlene is one of the nicest people i’ve met, especially considering the circumstances, and it’s touching to see her thanking Lorainne Melgosa for the work she does.

i had a great time shooting Shiprock HS against Kirtland Central HS on Saturday…two district championships! i was pretty excited about it because i haven’t shot much basketball this season, and i was not let down. those Shiprock and Kirtland fans are passionate about their teams, and although the both games were pretty scrappy, there was a sense of great sportsmanship throughout. and the boy’s game at Chieftain Pit in Shiprock was PACKED. i didn’t get out of the parking lot for about an hour after the game was done — i’m really glad i took my laptop to send photos. enjoy

(UPDATE to below: actually, i thought it’d be interesting to post this photo from yesterday (of a power plant) under the Shiprock photo. compare/contrast? full essays due Friday by noon ; )

i don’t photograph landscape much these days, which is kind of a shame, because that, snapshots of friends and oddities in high school, and the peacefulness of making prints in a darkroom are what really hooked me on photography at an early age.

i wouldn’t normally associate the Shiprock peak with foliage of any kind, but the San Juan River is right a little ways away (my dad the English teacher will kill me for that), and lends to some nice photos. i hope it prints well :)

Xavier Mascareñas/The Daily Times; A view Wednesday of the Shiprock peak, from a few miles outside Shiprock on U.S. 64, reflects the changing of seasons in the color of leaves on trees along the San Juan River.

i just wanted to post a few photos i liked from the last couple weeks that didn’t have faces, but that i was still happy with. it’s always a good challenge, and it can be pretty rewarding — a good way to break out of the daily box.
